Overview

Heroes, and Pirates, and Pluto, oh my!

"Save the cheerleader, save the world." A new series, a new mythology, and a new catchphrase. NBC's accidental superhero series, Heroes, was a huge hit on TV. Just like the characters (including fan favorite Hiro Nakamura), the show discovered it had unexpected power. One important element was its use of "new media", including posting an ongoing graphic novel on the web. (Article: 2006 in Television).

The number one movie of the year was certainly not as novel, but the level of its success still surprised many. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (the second in the series) earned more than $400 million in the US alone, a third more than its predecessor, and $150 million more than the second place movie, Night at the Museum. (Article: 2006 Movies)

One of the best-selling books (of all types) was the last installment of "Lemony Snicket"'s A Series of Unfortunate Events (The End). Stephen King proved he wasn't phoning it in with his highly successful novel, Cell. Maybe not a household name, but Stephenie Meyer's second book in the Twilight series, New Moon, was a top-selling hardback novel. (Article: 2006 Literature)

It's not often that astronomy is the buzz topic on radio talk shows, but that happened when the planet Pluto was redefined as a "dwarf planet". People actually protested the change, and the outraged calls created an opportunity to discuss scientific process.
