Events
1996 saw the debut of sci fi sitcom, 3rd Rock From the Sun on NBC as a mid-season replacement series. Although critics at the time had very low expectations for the shows, it was an unexpected success and was quickly picked up as a staple series for the network.
FOX series, Millennium, from Chris Carter, the creator of The X-Files also debuted in 1996 to limited success. Although it was renewed, it never proved to be as popular as it's older sibling.
FOX was also involved in an attempted American revival of venerable British series, Doctor Who. However, this resulted only in the production of a Made for TV movie whose American premier was on June 14th. The BBC would air it 13 days later.
Among the many genre shows cancelled in 1996, ABC's Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, was the longest-running. The Man of Steel would not re-appear until five years later when The WB re=worked the story with a teen-angst angle.
