• 1977: Star Wars revives the genre at the box office
• 1978: The BBC makes another attempt at selling Doctor Who to US television stations. Although previous attempts had largely been a failure, this time the rivetingly quirky performance of new lead actor Tom Baker propels the show to the status of cult sensation.
• 1978-1979: The success of Star Wars at the box office leads to the debut of several new American SciFi television programs, including Battlestar Galactica (1978), Logan's Run (1978) and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979).
