The 1950s' followed the tumultous war years of the 1940s and saw a new prosperity in the United States.

Overview

The rise of television as a mass medium would change the world forever. During the decade, the number of sets rose more than tenfold. As people started to stay home to watch, the movies tried to compete. Cheap Sci Fi was one way to make a profit, and Drive-In theatres were the rage. 3-D literally brought a new dimension to the movie-going experience. The Golden Age of science fiction continued, and the New Wave loomed. George Adamski and the rest of the contactees claimed friendly relations with the Space Brothers. In the late 1950s, Sputnik became the first artificial Earth satellite.
